An evening with Dale Ahlquist,                              President American Chesterton Society

Mr Ahlquist captivated a full house with a witty, thought-provoking talk on the state of education in Australia and America, peppering his presentation with insightful quotes from the extraordinary foresight and writings of G.K. Chesterton.

Ahlquist critiqued the modern educational focus on efficiency and standardised testing, contrasting it with Chesterton’s holistic vision that nurtures both the mind and the heart. His exploration showed how Chesterton’s critique rings as true as ever today - especially the overemphasis of utility over creativity.

Judging by the audience reaction, Dale’s comments resonated deeply, many of whom reflected on the pressure of a rigid, results-driven system.

Ahlquist urged the crowd to embrace a more imaginative approach to learning, one that values curiosity, individuality, and moral integrity alongside academic achievement. He also made a compelling case for returning to classical, faith-based educational roots, suggesting this could offer students a deeper sense of purpose, meaning, insight, and connection to cultural heritage.

The evening concluded with a lively Q&A session, sparking reflection on how Chesterton’s truly expansive mind offers deep solutions for reshaping modern education.

Professor Simon Haines, former CEO of the Ramsay Centre, delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, wrapping up a truly inspiring event.

The Hartford College community thanks Dale Ahlquist for his long journey to Sydney and generous time spent with us. We also thank Professor Haines for his support for our mission.
