Hartford Pioneers in New Liberal Arts School Curriculum

11 May 2022

Hartford College, Australia’s first Catholic Liberal Arts Highschool for boys (based in Sydney’s Daceyville), invited over 30 thought leaders in education to participate in Hartford’s Liberal Arts Symposium over the weekend (Saturday, 7 May).

The Symposium welcomed speakers and guests including Dr Kevin Donnelly AM, Dr Robert Carver, Dr Andrew Mullins and many others. Some travelled interstate to attend.

Dr Robert Carver, the Director of the ACU Ramsay Program (in Western Civilisation), kindly invited Hartford College to use their state-of-the-art facilities to host the event in ACU’s North Sydney Campus.

Topics for discussion included “Australia’s Curriculum: its declining global results and the absence of Western/Christian Heritage” and the “The Liberal Arts: its Content and Delivery”.

There was also an engaging workshop with the Symposium’s participants, discussing the essential authors, texts and areas of learning every boy between 10-16 should undertake studying the Liberal Arts in the Western Tradition.

Great works referenced included Homer, Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Dante, Aquinas, Augustine, Chaucer, Milton, Shakespeare, Dickens and CS. Lewis. Others mentioned the Bible, the Church Fathers, Latin, the Reformation and the Counter Reformation. Many great names and areas of learning were put forward, allowing all participants to continue the “great conversation”.

The afternoon also heard from recent high school graduates and current Liberal Arts students sharing their testimonies and key memories from school, including debating and the robust classroom discussions concerning society’s “big ideas”. Hartford College aims to foster such discourse amongst its students.

Concluding the event, Hartford’s General Manager, Mr Michael Mendieta, stated that he was “excited to see the full potential of Hartford’s graduates, and their impact in society, especially since they will become beneficiaries of our mentoring program, and our first-class Liberal Arts education. Families, work places and the community at large will benefit from these young men for generations to come”.

Hartford College is Australia’s first Liberal Arts high school for boys, and is highly regarded for its mentoring program and liberal Arts curriculum.

Applications for years 5, 6 and 7 are being accepted for year 2023.
