The Virtue of Traditional Education

Hartford’s Chair, Tim Mitchell, and CEO, Michael Mendieta, had the pleasure of hearing visiting UK educator, Katharine Birbalsingh, last weekend.

Katharine studied Philosophy & Modern Languages at The University of Oxford and is now the Headmistress and co-founder of Michaela Community School in Wembley, London.

Her school is one of the most culturally and socio-economically diverse in the UK.

The ‘Michaela method’ champions a culture that sets high expectations on all students, regardless of social backgrounds.

She encourages excellence in English and Mathematics, and her students also read the canon of Western Literature, such as Shakespeare.

Michaela’s teachers lead all classroom learning.

The school’s results show its students are culturally literate and have a learned resilience to succeed in their chosen pathways.

Her message resonates with Hartford College, especially in providing students a love for learning.

Her interview (link above) with John Anderson is fascinating.
